Week 3 posts / Accidental Wishes (new title!) week 3
« on: August 22, 2020, 05:48:06 PM »
Here is my week 3 draft, featuring a brand new title and ending! It was previously called An Ill-Conceived Wish if you're looking back in the forums at the earlier drafts. Many thanks to my wonderful critique partners Dan Koboldt and Steph Whitaker for the feedback this week!

Here's the blog post for my second draft, coming in at exactly 1000 words  :D
I left the main structure the same, but added in some details that were missing in the first draft, and cut a lot of words.

I loved the twist! You've built such a detailed world in so few words, it makes me want to read a full novel set there! Also cool to see the changes you made while drafting.

This was so creative! I loved your descriptions of all the different dragons, and the twist at the end where the pages became a dragon of their own! Very cool  :dragon:

Nicely done, Nyssa Rae! The opening really drew me in. I didn't realize what the colors meant until I saw how thoroughly you documented your drafting process. How cool that you shared that level of detail.

Thank you, that's great to hear! I wondered if the colours might be confusing, haha, but I'm glad to hear the notes helped make sense of it!

Love this idea! Great set up, I especially liked it when the genie-esq character had to remember how to smile. Interesting to see your non-linear approach via the colour coding too. Looking forward to the revised draft!

Thanks! That's one of my favourite parts too - trying to show how the genie character might look human, but she isn't really.

I love the way you color-coded your timeline of writing and explained your process! Very cool! And your story is so imaginative. I'm very much looking forward to seeing your editing process!

I'm glad you liked the colour-coding! I've always thought my writing process is a bit weird, so I thought it would be interesting to try and show it. And thank you!

loved that ending and the drafting process details, great idea!

Thank you! I wasn't sure the ending would have the impact I wanted, so I'm glad to hear you liked it!

Here is my first draft! I had fun with colour-coding my paragraphs as I wrote them to try and show the drafting process.

That twist at the end! This was very cool - I loved the blending of different realities. Trying to figure out what was real and how everything fit together kept me hooked the whole way through!

This story gave me shivers in the best way.
I love how you dropped hints at the beginning that were expanded on later (the bones in the wood, using they/them pronouns for Riley the first time we were introduced to them). This was such an efficient way to tell a story using so few words!

Thank you, it was a cool experience to get immediately immersed in the photo!
Webs are being woven, we'll see where they take me!

Writer & Editor Bios / Nyssa Rae - YA/NA SFF
« on: August 03, 2020, 01:12:24 AM »
Name: Nyssa Rae
Preferred Pronouns: She/Her

Bio: Nyssa lives in Canada, and is a mechanical engineer by day and writer by night. She temporarily works as a satellite engineer, with the hope of soon getting a permanent job working on rockets/satellites and the like. She's also a Highland dancer who has performed around the world, when travelling around the world was a thing we could do. She has been writing stories since she was old enough to hold a pencil, and hopes to be published one day.

What type of stories do you write?
I write mostly YA science fiction and fantasy, although I'm experimenting with a few NA/adult stories in these same genres. I've always read to escape the real world, so SFF is my happy place when writing. As an engineer myself, I've got a passion for writing girls in STEM because we don't see enough of that.

What are you working on right now?
I'm currently querying my third completed novel (the first two are shelved), which is a YA sci-fi about a girl trying to get her spaceship pilot's license who runs into a whale in space. Finishing up some edits while I start querying, but once that's done I think I might go back to work on a half-written delightfully queer adult fantasy novel.

Like it says in the title, I was immediately drawn in by the setting of this photo. Not sure what plot will go along with this yet, but I'll find out soon! Most likely it will involve magic...
