I've made a few changes to the beginning of my story, and tried to tighten up the prose throughout. Here are the new first lines:
Living in a big city means you see all kinds of strange things. And me, well, I?ve seen and done even stranger things in my several lifetimes. But when this man stopped in front of me and smiled, it set my teeth on edge.

This is my first year participating, and I really enjoyed diving into this one. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!
I backed away as smoke pooled around his face and under his hood. He reached up to catch the tendrils, to shape them, and in the process remake his features.
